Cake roll box with arched lid: self-locking confectionery packaging

This cake roll box is an example of packaging where the structure works for the product. The arched “chest” shape follows the silhouette of the roll: a tray base with walls, arched end panels and a lid that wraps over them in a smooth curve. Next to standard rectangular boxes, such packaging stands out on the shelf immediately — and for confectionery, the battle for the buyer’s attention starts right there.

The structure is self-locking: the box is die-cut from a single blank and assembled with locking tabs, without glue. Before assembly, the blanks are stored and shipped flat — convenient for confectionery producers who assemble packaging as production goes. The lid lock allows the box to be opened and closed repeatedly.

The box is made of coated cardboard with a density of 272 g/m² and a polyethylene layer. The coated surface ensures clean, saturated offset printing, while the PE layer creates a barrier against moisture and grease — an essential requirement for cardboard packaging for confectionery. Printing is offset, 4+0: a full-colour image on the face side of the sheet. A protective varnish is applied over the print — it protects the inks from abrasion and keeps the box looking neat throughout the packaging’s life.

The order includes two designs on one structure: “Zmeură Fistic” and “Caramel”. Both versions are die-cut with the same custom die and differ only in printing. It is a rational model for brands with a range of flavours: the tooling is made once, and new items are launched without structural development costs. The die for the arched box was developed individually, but the Pergament printing house in Chisinau also has a library of over 3000 ready-made cutting dies — the customer can choose an existing structure and significantly reduce the time and budget of launching custom cardboard packaging.

Order type — packaging. Full production cycle in Moldova: custom die development, prepress, offset printing, varnishing and die-cutting of the self-locking structure.
